Advertising Vacancies
During the tight labour market of 2007 and 2008 many organizations used a variety of mechanisms to attract workers. There were messages like “we are hiring” on sales receipts, on bumper stickers and billboards. Some Companies, when they couldn’t find the workers they needed, went to other countries to find them. They then had to wait for lengthy immigration and visa requirements before the workers could come to Canada. Even during this time, workers already in Calgary were being under-utilized or not employed at all.
To broaden the pool from which your organization recruits, advertise job vacancies in many places, using a variety of methods:
- Use the internet, post the vacancy on Company website, on trade or professional association websites;
- Post the job internally so employees can apply or refer others;
- Advertise in trade, community or association newsletters;
- Tap professional or industry networks;
- Contact community cultural groups, Aboriginal groups, immigrant-serving agencies or organizations representing people with disabilities and professional or trades licensing bodies for referrals;
- Check CalgaryCareerConnect: www.calgarycareerconnect.com for immigrant job preparation programs that may be graduating workers;
- Contact schools, universities, colleges and private institutions that provide education relevant to your business;
- If customers or the public visit your workplace, post help wanted sign and advertise "always looking for good people" on receipts, invoices, flyers etc.;
- Participate in career shows to advertise job opportunities;
- Make use of social networking technology such as Linked-In or Facebook.
