Recruiting Persons with Disabilities
When advertising a vacancy, rather than relying on your website, advertise it with the appropriate Service Providers.Some private and not-for-profit organizations in Calgary offer a complete array of employer supports that include: candidate screening, preparation, referral, accommodation planning and placement follow-up.These service providers will work with you to identify your needs, assist with job analysis, screen candidates and refer top-notch candidates to be interviewed by you.
Establishing a partnership with a service provider and developing a relationship built on service quality will reduce your worries and workload with respect to recruitment in general and also in terms of recruitment of persons with disabilities.
There are many different service providers available in Calgary. They all utilize different models of support and placement; it is important to contact several providers before deciding which one suits your organization.
Things to consider before contacting service providers:
- Describe the position you are looking to fill.
- Is this a contract position or regular (permanent) position?
- What are the professional qualifications or work experience requirements?
- Number of hours required for position (p/t or f/t).
- Can the job duties be shared with another employee if necessary?
- Is shift time flexible? (start/end and break time)
- Can the position be altered in order to accommodate a qualified candidate?
- Will you accept a trained job coach for onsite coaching for the new employee?
- Is your facility barrier free? (i.e. is it accessible?)
- Are you looking for full time support with the employee or are you willing to build natural supports within your workplace?
- Do you always want support to be available to you or the employee?
- Are you comfortable working with diminished support from an agency?
- Do your organizational values align with those of the Service Provider?
- What is their expectation of customer service from the Service Provider?
- How much training/mentoring/guidance are you able to provide your new employee?
- Do you need assistance in making your location more accessible for all employees?
- Does your organization provide comprehensive onboarding to all new employees?
Service Provider Questions Now that you know what you’re looking for, where will you find it? Just like hiring an employee, selecting a service provider takes a little research and due diligence to make sure it is a match for your recruitment goals. It is recommended that you speak to a number of service providers in order to find the one that matches your recruitment needs.
Ask a service provider:
- Can you explain the hiring process for one of your clients?
- Do you provide them pre-employment training?
- How quickly can you fill this position?
- Are there any fees involved in your service?
- Do you offer additional training for my existing staff?
- Do you provide funding or links to funding for accommodations?
- Do you provide on the job supports for candidates? How long can you provide this support? Will there be multiple job coaches on the work site?
- What can I do to assist the candidate’s transition into the workplace?
- How can you support me if the candidate is not a suitable fit for the role and organization?
- Will you provide multiple candidates for the available positions?
- Will a member(s) of your staff attend the interview with the candidate?
- Do we need to set up a site tour before bringing candidates to our facility?
- Will the candidate require a job coach (only required for some employees with disabilities)?
- If so, how often can I expect to see the job coach?
- What is your preferred method of communication?
- Can you provide references for your services and successful placements?
